Mohamed Malas

Syrian writer and filmmaker Mohammad Malas was born in Quneitra, Golan, in 1945. Before moving to Moscow to pursue cinema studies, Malas worked as a schoolteacher from 1965 until 1968.

He graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in 1974, and directed several short films during his stay in Russia.

Eventually he returned to Syria and started working for Syrian Television and producing short films, including “Quneitra 74” and “Al Zakira.”

His movies were met with great critical and popular acclaim and received prestigious awards.

His documentary “Al Manam,” about the lives of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, was released in 1987 and won first prize at the Cannes International Audiovisual Festival.

Malas’s first feature film, “Ahlam Al Madina,” was released in 1983 and won first prize at the Valencia International Film Festival.
